Fannie Flagg's career started in the fifth grade when she wrote, directed, and starred in her first play entitled, "The Whoopee Girls" and she has not stopped since.  At age 19 she began writing and producing television specials, and later wrote and appeared on "Candid Camera."  She then went on to distinguish herself as an actress and a writer in television, films, and the theater.  She is the New York Times bestselling author of Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man; Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café; Welcome to the World, Baby Girl!; Standing in the Rainbow; A Redbird Christmas; Can't Wait to Get to Heaven; and I Still Dream About You.  Flagg's script for the movie Fried Green Tomatoes was nominated for an Academy Award, the Writers Guild of America Award, and won the highly regarded Scripter Award for best screenplay of the year.  Flagg lives happily in California and Alabama.

Our Mission:

The Friends of the Mansfield Public Library is a group of volunteers who actively support the library and its mission through fundraising, promotion, and advocacy.

Joining the Friends is a great way to support your local library and to make a difference in your community.

To provide financial support for the library, the Friends operate an ongoing used book sale, which raises thousands of dollars each year.  The Friends also offer durable canvas book bags in two sizes, plastic book bags, electronic time-keeping bookmarks, and "Really Big Coloring Books" for sale in the library.  Check out our "Friends Store" page for more information on these items.  If you have used, recently published books, you can donate them to our used book sale and receive a tax deduction!  Just bring your used books to the circulation desk at the library.

The Friends also put on the fantastic "Mansfield Reads!" program each year, in which a renowned author visits our city to discuss the particular book chosen for that year's program.  Different exciting events are scheduled each year to tie in with the book's theme.  A Friday night "Author Event" is scheduled in which the public is invited to meet the author face-to-face.  Previous Reads! authors include well-known, award-winning writers Robert Olen Butler, Paul Boller, Elmer Kelton, JA Jance, H.G. "Buzz" Bissinger, and Tim Madigan.  The Friends also hosts a "Mansfield Writes!" each fall in which a panel of popular local authors share writing tips with an audience of aspiring writers.  See our Mansfield Reads! and Mansfield Writes! pages for more details.
